How do we define extraordinary?

We often hear that for organizations to achieve extraordinary things, they need extraordinary people. It begs the question — “How do we define extraordinary?”

Quite often it is referred to an individual’s ability in relation to their technical competence, in other words the knowledge, skills and experience required for the successful accomplishment of a business role, or task. Now although hard skills (such as proficiency in a foreign language, degree or capability to operate a complex machine) are a vital part of technical competence – extraordinary requires much, much more.

Imagine an organization comprised solely of individuals who may have gained advanced qualifications at college and even have a number of year’s real-world experience in the workplace — if same individuals are unable to communicate effectively with others, they’re impact on the organization will be limited. To truly achieve great things, organizations require people who are able to communicate information well to others – whether in person or online. Very few employees have been trained how to present information in an engaging manner that engages the hearts and minds of their customers, boss, peers, direct reports or vendor partners.

To meet deadlines, manage projects and achieve ambitious outcomes, we need to develop people who are able to influence others through high quality presentation and facilitation skills. How we conduct ourselves has a major impact on how others absorb information – whether that is in relation to our body language, tone or words. Therefore, to create an extraordinary culture — one with sustained high performance, we must develop the presentation skills of our employees.
